Aim and Scope

The School is multidisciplinary and is meant to gather together experts in various aspects of Non-equilibrium Phenomena and Quantum Physics, with a particular focus on some mathematical aspects of micro and macroscopic systems.
Among others, the following topics will be covered:
Complex systems - Irreversible Thermodynamics - Systems out of equilibrium - Quantum transport - Mathematical aspects of Hermitian and non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics - Quantum dynamical systems.
Two days will be sponsored by Associazione A.M. Anile with sessions more oriented to the applications.

Venue

The Ettore Majorana Foundation

The Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (EMFCSC) is named after an outstanding Italian physicist. Born in Sicily in 1906, Ettore Majorana’s breadth of vision and exceptional contributions to theoretical physics moved Enrico Fermi to the following statement: «There are many categories of scientists, people of second and third rank, who do their best, but do not go very far. There are also people of first-class rank, who make great discoveries, fundamental to the development of science. But then there are the geniuses, like Galilei and Newton. Well, Ettore Majorana was one of them».
Every year since 1963, authors of new discoveries and inventions come to Erice; 102 of them were awarded the Nobel Prize after their participation in the Ettore Majorana Schools and 49 were already Nobel laureates when they started to take part in the Centre activities. These scientific world leaders teach to students from all over the world who are eager to receive the latest knowledge directly from the mouth of its authors.
Embracing 136 Schools, covering all branches of Science, the Centre is situated in the old pre-mediaeval city of Erice where four restored monasteries (one of which was the residence of the Viceroy of Sicily during the XIV and XV Centuries) provide an appropriate setting for high intellectual endeavour.

Erice

Perched on the summit of Mount Erice, 750 meters above sea level, the medieval town of Erice offers one of the most breathtaking views in Sicily. From its stone-paved alleys and ancient ramparts, visitors can gaze out across the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Egadi Islands, and, on a clear day, all the way to Mount Etna.
Erice is a place where history and legend intertwine. Founded by the Elymians and later touched by Greek, Carthaginian, Roman, and Norman civilizations, it has been a crossroads of cultures for millennia. The town’s atmosphere still preserves this blend: churches and convents coexist with castles and watchtowers, while traditional houses with flower-filled courtyards open onto labyrinthine streets.
At the heart of Erice rises the Castello di Venere, built on the site of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Venus. Nearby stand the Pepoli Towers and the Balio Gardens, offering both cultural heritage and stunning panoramas. Walking through the town, one discovers the Chiesa Madre, numerous small chapels, and monasteries that once shaped religious life here.
Erice is also famous for its pastries, especially almond-based sweets and “genovesi ericine,” whose recipes have been handed down by cloistered nuns. Local craftsmanship thrives in ceramics, carpets, and embroidery, continuing traditions that reflect the town’s identity.
A visit to Erice means stepping back in time while enjoying the warmth of Sicilian hospitality, a journey through history, art, and landscapes that remain etched in memory.

Information

How to reach Erice

Erice is very close to Trapani Airport (see https://www.airgest.it/) that is served by the low cost company Ryanair (see https://www.ryanair.com/).
The second closest airport is Palermo Airport (see https://www.aeroportodipalermo.it/) that is served by many airlines.
Transfers from both Palermo and Trapani airports to Erice are organized by the Ettore Majorana Foundation (EMFCSC).
Transfers will be available provided you have properly registered yourself no later than July 7. On your arrival at the airport you shall look for the driver of the EMFCSC who is waiting for you and shall carry you to Erice. He will be there showing about the poster of the International School of Statistical Physics.
In case the driver is not there within half an hour after your arrival, you shall call the Secretariat of the EMFCSC (phone no.: +39 0923 869133) for instructions.
Note: the cost of a trip to Erice by taxi may not be reimbursed unless the trip has been authorized by the EMFCSC.

Restaurants

Meals are free at a few selected restaurants – you just have to show your badge and sign a list provided by the restaurant. Beverages and dishes not included in the EMFCSC menu should be paid for as "extras". An updated restaurant list will be given to you with the registration folder. If you need a special menu (vegetarian, kosher, etc.), you shall negotiate directly with the restaurant (the EMSCS staff will be glad to offer their assistance).

Accompanying persons

Rooms in Erice are limited. For this reason persons accompanying accepted applicants are in general considered as regular participants with the same benefits and duties: they are requested to pay a reduced fee and to wear the EMFCSC badge.

Other information
  • Upon your arrival at EMFCSC, after registration, please read carefully: (1) the material in the folder concerning the regulations of the EMFCSC, meals, the location of restaurants working for EMFCSC, etc.; (2) the specific information about the workshop posted in the lobby of San Rocco (location and starting time of lectures, program, social events, etc.).
  • Smoking is forbidden inside all the facilities of the EMFCSC (San Rocco, San Domenico, San Francesco), including the rooms.
  • Erice is located about 800 m above sea level, on top of a mountain next to the sea. In the evenings in Erice may be cold and, occasionally, foggy or/and windy. Pack extra warm clothing and good jogging/walking shoes (recommended on occasion of most excursions as well as to walk on the Erice slippery pavements). No formal dress is requested in any social event, banquet included.
  • Celebrated wines, cookies, ceramics, coral jewels and other Erice souvenirs may be purchased in some (not all) shops with a 10% discount (just show the EMFCSC badge).
  • EMFCSC facilities host two old (occasionally in tune) pianos. Participants playing portable instruments are encouraged to bring them along (with the scores). Classic or folk music sessions are often organized in San Rocco, especially after some glasses of Marsala wine.
  • Moderate xerox-copying is free. A limited number of PC’s and internet terminals are available to participants. The EMFCSC is equipped with power-point/pdf projector facilities.
  • The EMFCSC relies on local staff, reduced in number but extremely efficient, ready to solve all difficult problems which may arise (travel ticket & reservation changes, PC facilities, visa, medical care, police, etc.). The reference person is Mr. Pino Aceto. For all technicalities concerning the workshop there is a School Secretariat office at San Rocco next to the Marsala Room.
